INTRO - Collaborating and commissioning Contemporary Artists on Hospitality Projects
Today, we take you behind the scenes of our work as an art consultancy when collaborating with contemporary artists on hospitality projects. This has been a questions asked by many of our clients but also the artists we’ve engaged for the first time.
Understanding the Project
Our process begins with a deep understanding of the project, the client’s vision, brand philosophy, and aspirations, along with the interior design concept. Once these elements are established, we start sourcing artists who align with these criteria in terms of their medium, artistic practices, price-range and philosophy.
Developing the Art Concept
After internally developing the art concept and narrative, we present it to our clients. At this stage, we also introduce a carefully curated selection of contemporary artists who we believe will complement the hotel development. These artists range from emerging to established artists and are sourced either locally or internationally – with or without gallery representation.
Engaging the Artists
Once we receive client approval and have signed agreements, we create a tailored artist brief. This brief introduces the curatorial concept and project, shares inspirations from each artist’s past oeuvre that we believe fits the direction, and includes images of the space, location, and history. We usually schedule a call to walk the artist through the art commission, ensuring they fully understand the project’s vision.
From this point, the artist embarks on their creative journey, conducting research, experimenting, and occasionally seeking our input. The emphasis is always on ensuring each artwork is a unique and authentic reflection of the artist’s voice, aligned with the project’s concept and inspirations.
Completing the Artwork / Art Commission
Upon completion, artists document their work and prepare it for collection. We then collaborate with art handlers to send the pieces to the framers. Here, we work closely with the framer and artist to develop the perfect dialogue between the artwork and the frame, ensuring museum-standard quality.
