Crowne Plaza Amsterdam South tributes the composer in various ways, attesting to his success decades after his death and across distant countries and continents. On the first floor, after entering the hotel, a large-scale mural by the Vienna-based artist Nadine Werant – seamlessly weaving together the essence of New York City, the captivating world of jazz, and the various artistic movements that defined the 1920s. Drawing inspiration from Cubism and the surrealism of the era, the mural portrays Gershwin at the piano set against a dreamlike, abstracted nighttime view of the New York skyline. His hand – his weapon of expression – is presented at a grand scale and juxtaposes with a glittering skyscraper facade to its side.
