Personal Insights behind our work while joining a couple from Hamburg on their art collecting Journey. Taking a look behind the role “at the role” of an art consultant and how we at VELVENOIR join art collectors on their art collecting journey.
For us, an art consultant, at least we see ourselves like this, we have to wear different hats, yet having our clients’ aspirations front of mind. Knowing how personal art collecting is, we merge our global art market knowledge with technical tools to not only visit art galleries and art fairs together to experience the art first hand, but to share curated private views of artworks we believe connect, inspire and spark conversations for them – as we know, time for most of our collectors is time sensitive. So, we are joining every step of the way, from the art fair or artist studio visits, to manage the entire acquisition process, transportation, import management to framing and professional installation on site.
Today, we are reflecting on an incredible shared experience with a pair from Hamburg, offering you deeper insight into the behind-the-scenes efforts of VELVENOIR as you delve into this couple’s story.
Given the unique and personal nature of each collaboration, our initial priority was to grasp the couple’s vision and the concept they aimed to convey. The clients possessed an existing art collection that they had curated on their own, including inherited pieces from their families. Hence, our thrilling task was to reconfigure the presentation and exhibition of their acquired artworks, while incorporating new, striking additions to the collection that aligned with the couple’s preferences and aesthetic.
Our journey began with the creation of a private viewing room, carefully curated with artists and artworks we believed would resonate with the couple. This space served as a starting point for discussing their preferences and choices. To introduce our clients to both emerging talents and established blue-chip artists, we extended an invitation for them to accompany us on a visit to Art Basel. Taking clients to art fairs offers a remarkable opportunity to immerse oneself in the latest trends and engage in discussions surrounding contemporary art. Recognizing the value of our clients’ time, we made a prior visit to the art fair, noting down galleries and artworks that would deeply resonate with the couple from Hamburg.
We provided recommendations to the couple regarding their existing artwork, suggesting reframing and a contemporary interpretation for each piece. To create a captivating entrance area, we curated a gallery wall that harmoniously blended the couple’s existing pieces with carefully selected new artworks. The remaining collection was strategically repositioned and displayed in the home-office area. As a special addition, we sourced a Picasso lithograph from Aspen, which perfectly complemented the existing collection and introduced the work of a renowned blue-chip artist. By combining emerging artists with established ones, we fostered powerful dialogues within the collection, adding significant value.
We prioritize a comprehensive approach when working with clients, taking into account the broader context and sensitivity of their private space. In the case of this couple, who also had young children in the household, we considered their safety as paramount. To mitigate any potential risks, we arranged for a custom-made museum box to display Hayv Kahraman’s artwork, ensuring both the protection of the artwork itself and the well-being of the children.
Our focus extends beyond selecting the most fitting artworks; we also recognize the couple’s interest in their art collection as an investment. Working with this couple was immensely rewarding, and we are looking forward to continuing our art journey together over the next years.
