We've first encountered his work at an exhibition in Salzburg, Austria and have been following his artistic practice ever since. ⁠⁠Yaque interprets colour as the beginning of the search for this essence in ourselves, exploring pigment, shade, depth and movement in his canvases to dramatic effect. He has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions worldwide. He has held the Rockefeller Foundation residence in New York, and was part of the Cuban Pavillion at the 57th Venice Biennale. In her series Nomad Patterns, she made her work from fragments of everyday objects – cups, bowls, jars, pots and the like – that appear as staged somehow indeterminately between something that is about to collapse or has just been restored; between things that have been invested with the attention of care but that also have the appearance of a ruin. These works aim to reflect on aspects of loss and care, disposal and preservation, and on the relationship we develop with the day-to-day objects that populate our everyday lives. ⁠Her work, seen within the image is ceramic, resin, transfer-print glaze in various dimensions. One of our picks was the artwork from Jonathan, a large-scale fine art photograph beautiful framed with a white shadow-gap frame. Her richly coloured paintings of the Women’s Dreaming story from Mina Mina are dynamic images of this powerful ceremonial site in the Tanami Desert. The paintings may seem childlike and naive, but his concern is to avoid faithful accuracy in favor of a universal expression. His models are figures and shapes made of modelling clay, which he greatly enlarges and exaggerates when painting them. His particular style of painting is bold, often lavish in his application of the fluid paint, and therefore reminiscent of revolutionary murals, depictions imbued with messages. He reinterprets it expressionistically, in strong paintings. #HappyCollectors and a wonderful collaboration ⁠ #HappyCollectors and a wonderful collaboration ⁠This Summer we had the pleasure to source and acquire this powerful work from German artist Pia Fries at her #NewYork Gallery. In collaboration with the interior design team of #AndreaRodman this new work has been carefully installed at a Vancouver residence going hand-in hand with the unique interior design concept Andrea has designed for her client. The work from Pia Fries invites to close, deliberate examination. Tracing the contours of her gestures, the viewer explores the various textures and materials used to merge an array of energetic colors across a bright void of space. Yau expands on Fries’s critical use of paint, “It takes an immense amount of confidence to leave so much of the painting open and untouched; it takes even more confidence to use white paint on a white field. The interaction of figure (paint and form) and ground (unpainted surface) is an intricate and entrancing dance.” The artist arrives at a complex visual unity through varied means of applying color, unpredictable layers of imagery, and the viscous materiality of her medium. #ArtSourcing for private collectors, this time loo #ArtSourcing for private collectors, this time looking at the powerful work from Jamaican artist Paul Anthony Smith. In this series 'Dreams Deferred', titled after the Langston Hughes poem of the same name, depicts varied urban landscapes, each seemingly contained within single or double chain link fences. The underlayer of these works are photographs taken by Smith of mundane, vacant lots throughout New York City; though when painted over with a heavy impasto of oil stick, these surfaces transform into lush gardens that push against and challenge their barriers. To Smith, these works are a metaphor for the elusive American dream – seductive flowers ready to be picked, yet accessible only to a certain set of people who are granted entry. This flora functions akin to a memento mori, serving as a reminder that once these beautiful, yet fleeting, objects are taken for one’s own, they quickly extinguish. The gestural and painterly surfaces of these works suggest that although structures in place attempt to regiment access to these Edenic spaces, the dream has potential to take on a life of its own and rebel against these systems. Artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, the stock market, virtual reality, and augmented reality are materials she molds into visions of beauty, bringing the concept of value into focus. Meyohas inserts subjectivity into the mechanized, creating performative situations out of which artworks emerge as reflections. ⁠⁠Meyohas’s practice, which she has described as existing at the “intersection of markets, society and emerging technology,” is characterized by this same unapologetic approach to the realities of art and capital. Bitchcoin (2015), her first major project, was born of two contemporary trends: the ascent of cryptocurrency and the emergence of social media influencers who convert their personal lives into bankable commodities.“Karl Marx used the metaphor of a reflection multiple times in his writing to describe value,” Meyohas says. “But I’d almost use a financial term like leverage. The constructions within the frame are leveraged through reflection.”⁠⁠These pieces are often archly feminine, sometimes featuring pastel colors and flowers, not to mention the yawning speculum’s-eye view at their center. #AndazWalkofMyths⁠⁠The protagonists of Pragu #AndazWalkofMyths⁠⁠The protagonists of Prague legends such as Libuse, Knight Brunsvik, and the White Lion inspired the artists profoundly and found manifold expression thanks to the targeted compilation of art movements: the entrance already impresses with a breathtaking glass installation by the Czech artist Vendulka Prchalová. This installation takes its cue from the old craft and references the astronomical clock - probably one of Prague's most famous landmarks - and brings it impressively into the modern age. Visitors are invited to delve further into the Andaz world and discover unique installations by Czech artist David Valner inspired by the Brunsvik forest or the Golden Road by Portuguese Miguel A. Rodrigues, large-scale murals by Jakub Tytykalo on the theme of Kafka, and impressive paintings in the public areas. The legends are whispered here, gently taking over the space and accompanying the guest to their room, where works based on the legends of Libuse and Knight Brunsvik await them.
